FIAT X/19 RACE CAR

The X1/9 was originally designed and built for Targa racing. This car is the only X1/9 in New Zealand with the single overhead cam motor to have entered the Targa.

Maurice Thomson Motors was chosen as the most appropriate specialist to help build and complete this project. From the rollcage to the seats, belts and low volume certification, Maurice did it all to get the car ready for its debut in the Tauranga Targa of 2005.

Since completing the last main NZ Targa of 2005 considerable modification and work has been undertaken by Maurice Thomson Motors.
These modifications include
1. New racing gearbox from Italy, utilising X1/9 1500 drive shaft ends.
2. New racing clutch and pressure plate
3. Shifting the distributor to be driven off the cam
4. Smaller crank pulley to decrease water pump revs and cavitation and lower alternation rpm
5. Altering cam belt cover and manufacture of special shields to guard against stones and debris affecting the cam belt
6. New engine mounts and dogbone
7. Brake bias valve fitted
8. Rejetting of carbs
9. Manufacture of new exhaust and extractor system with heat shields which were all ceramic coated
10. Fitting an oil cooler and new windage tray in the sump

Twelve months ago this car was fast. Now, thanks to Maurice Thomson Motors, it is extremely fast and reliable.

Maurice now services this race car on a permanent basis and will continue to do so – such is the faith and confidence I have in his ability. Along with this great ability Maurice brings a wealth of experience, meticulous workmanship and honesty – all of which he applies to craft this great classic race car.
