Staff Biographies

Maurice Thomson

IMG_0586_1_1_1.JPGMaurice left school in December 1969 to join Thomson Motors Ltd, then owned by his father, in the parts department.He then worked for Torino Motors, at the time the Fiat importer for New Zealand, also in the parts department, and then for Town & Country Cars, Torino Motor's retail outlet in Auckland, selling cars.

He commenced his motor mechanic apprenticeship in 1972, completing the course in 1977. Maurice then moved to England to work for Fiat Auto UK, returning in late 1980 and purchased the parts and service business of Thomson Motors from his father, Clyde Thomson.

He began importing used Fiat and Alfa Romeo Spiders, which due to major customer demand carried on until 1990, at which point the pressure of mass Japanese imports removed this market. Since then Maurice has concentrated on ensuring that Thomson Motors provides the highest standards of parts and service in New Zealand.

He has been involved with Motorsport for many years and is a Technical Officer, and Scrutineer for Motor Sport New Zealand. In the past he has been Chief Scrutineer for Targa.

He is also qualified as a Low Volume Vehicle Certifier within our area.

Mark Richards


IMG_0585_1.JPGMark commenced work for us as a School Leaver and has learnt all aspects of our business, from Building Roll Cages to servicing all makes and models of vehicles.Building race engines etc.

He particularly enjoys carrying out large engine repairs and restorations and is a very valuable member of our team.

Pam started working at Thomson Motors part time in 1988 when her children where little. As they got older she has been working full time in the Office, looking after the administration side of the business along with the Website enquiries.



Jim Cameron

IMG_0593_2.JPGJim secured an apprenticeship in early 1961 as an apprentice maintenance engineer with an old established English printing Company. He then worked as an Agricultural Engineer to gain experience in Hydraulics and Diesel engines. From there he moved back to maintenance engineering with a Plastics Extension Company. In 1972 he secured a job with a small Design and Development Engineering Company who had contacts with both Aston Martin Lagonda and the Vauxhall Motor Company. He then emigrated to New Zealand in 1974 to work for Fisher and Paykel. This led to him attempting to go it alone as a Contract Maintenance Engineer, but ended up building large steel boat hulls in Auckland. After building his own 48ft steel ketch and living on board for seven years and getting work in various boat yards he moved ashore to Tauranga with his wife Hazel, semi-retired and purchased his first project car, a Lancia, which brought him  into contact with Maurice Thomson. After moving to the Waikato in 1999 and started part-time work for Maurice Thomson Motors. He built his own Fiat 128 race car and competed in the Dunlop Targa in 2000.

At this time Maurice was beginning to do lots of race car preparation and with his engineering background was asked to do the engineering and roll-cage work.

Jim works part time for us when required between building his own home on a
lifestyle block just out of Te Awamutu.

His skills are very valuable to us and allows us to offer a range of skills not found in most Workshops.
